After-School Options in Northern Virginia

By Kaizen Kids ·

The best after-school option covers the gap between school dismissal and when you can collect your child. Start with that gap, then compare homework time, activities and total cost. A good activity still leaves you with a transport problem if no one can get your child there.

Cover the whole afternoon: school handoff, then afternoon coverage, then parent pickup.
A class also needs a plan before and after.

Match the option to your afternoon

Each option solves a different part of the day. Use this shortlist to decide which ones are worth visiting.

  • A school-based program: check whether it runs at your child's school, whether a place is available and when pickup ends.
  • A private program with school pickup: confirm that your school is on its current route and that parent pickup fits your workday.
  • A sitter or family arrangement: agree who meets your child, what happens until you arrive and who covers an absence.
  • A separate sports or arts class: plan transport and supervision before and after class. The class alone may not cover the whole afternoon.

Check the school-based option for your county

Fairfax County's SACC program serves kindergarten through sixth grade at public elementary schools and community centers. Its published after-school hours run from dismissal until 6:15 p.m. Check the center directory and registration information for your child.

In Loudoun County, CASA serves kindergarten through fifth grade and publishes hours from dismissal until 6 p.m. Families in Ashburn, Purcellville and South Riding can check the county's location list and current registration instructions. A listed school does not tell you whether a place is available.

Compare a normal day and a disrupted day

Write down dismissal time, who takes over, the latest pickup time and the drive home. Then repeat the check for an early release or teacher workday.

For example, if school ends at 3 p.m. and you can arrive at 5:45 p.m., a 4 p.m. class leaves a gap unless someone handles both sides of it. This is a planning example, not a local program schedule.

  • Who takes over at school dismissal?
  • Does the arrangement cover your actual pickup time?
  • What changes on early-release days or school closures?
  • What is the backup if the usual adult or program is unavailable?

Choose the activities after the hours fit

Once coverage works, compare what your child will do. Ask when homework happens, how much time is active and what the child can choose. Visit with one or two priorities rather than expecting one program to do everything.

If you're considering Kaizen Kids, start with the after-school program and send your child's school name so the location team can check pickup.
