Homework Support vs. Tutoring: What Does Your Child Need?
By Kaizen Kids ·
Homework support usually gives a child time for assigned work and help getting unstuck. Tutoring focuses on teaching a subject or skill. Providers use these terms differently, so ask what help your child will actually receive. Kaizen Kids includes homework support in after school; it does not offer tutoring.
What does homework support usually include?
An after-school program may set aside a place and time for assignments and have an adult nearby when a child needs help. That does not tell you whether staff teach a subject, check every answer or contact you about work left unfinished. Ask each provider what it does.
Understood suggests looking at the homework space and asking how adults help and communicate with families. Use those questions to learn the actual routine, rather than assuming the words homework help mean the same thing everywhere.

When might a tutor be the better fit?
If your child repeatedly needs a concept taught again, or needs a plan for one subject or skill, ask about teaching focused on that topic. A tutor may be a better fit for that need than general homework time.
A child can also need both: a place to start daily assignments and separate instruction on a topic that keeps causing trouble. Ask what each service covers before expecting one to do both jobs.
How can you tell which kind of help your child needs?
Notice whether the trouble is with one assignment or with the idea behind several assignments. A prompt to get started may help with the first. Repeated confusion may call for an explanation from the teacher or focused instruction on that subject.
Ask your child what feels hard and ask the teacher what they are seeing. Then ask a prospective provider how it would respond. That conversation is more useful than diagnosing the problem from an unfinished worksheet.
What should you ask about homework before choosing after school?
Ask to see where homework happens and describe a day when your child gets stuck. Find out who can help, what happens if the work stays unfinished and how you will hear about it. The answers show whether the program's support matches your child's needs.
Kaizen Kids offers homework support as part of its after-school program, not tutoring. When you ask about pickup and a tour, tell the team your child's school and what kind of homework help you are looking for.

- Will unfinished work come home, and how will I know?
- Does the program give homework time, teach subject lessons or both?
